The Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox has always been the go-to site for photos of cultivated plants, both native and exotic. We are pleased to announce that the Plant Toolbox also hosts illustrations of native trees and shrubs of the Southeast by botanist-artist Dr. John Tobe. The Plant Toolbox currently hosts 35 of Dr. Tobe’s illustrations, but more will be added in the future. You can see all the illustrations by using the search tag: illustration.
These technical illustrations highlight the form, leaves, flowers and fruits. They include diagnostic details useful in identifying the species and distinguishing them from other similar plants. They also typically include illustrations of the seedlings, which is something most guides do not show. The illustrations are in color and were created digitally over the past few years as a form of self-study. None of the illustrations has been published previously. The Plant Toolbox is pleased to share these illustrations under Dr. Tobe’s Creative Commons license.
