The Plant Toolbox Is Coming Up Roses

(Updated: Sept. 23, 2025, 5:54 a.m.)

Roses are some of the most popular ornamental shrubs and climbers in North Carolina and throughout the world. Who doesn’t love their elegance, their perfume and their overall garden-worthiness? No garden plant is more evocative or has a more fabled history than the rose. Recognizing the rose’s unique place in the hearts of gardeners, the Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox recently completed an update of its rose listings.

Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteer Karen Andre (state volunteer), with assistance from Jeannette Lee (Wake County) and others, recently completed an overhaul of the roses listed on the Plant Toolbox. They updated the selection of cultivars, added new photos and improved the cultural information for over 200 listings, including three NC native roses. Our native roses are wildlife- and pollinator-friendly and a great addition to the landscape.

If you’re looking for a new rose to add to your garden or want to know more about this popular genus of plants, the Plant Toolbox is the place to start.
