Prolong the flowering period

Remove spent blossoms to prolong the flowering period.  The plant puts energy into the blossom to attract a pollinator.  Once the fruits/seeds begins to develop the plant no longer needs pollinators or flowers so all the energy goes into the fruits/seeds.  By removing the spent flower, you prevent the fruit/seed from developing and the plant has to start the reproductive cycle over with a new flower.
