Collapse ▲Join us for two plant ID classes this summer, offered in partnership with Longwood Gardens! The classes run from June 6 to July 18, and students will have access to course materials for an additional 6 months after the classes end.
You can participate anywhere that you have access to the internet, and there are no required presentations or any set times that you will need to meet online. There will be several scheduled live sessions, but these are optional (as are all assignments and activities in the courses) and will be recorded and available to watch on your own time.
Courses
Understanding Plants
Improve your botanical skills through a study of leaves, stems, flowers, fruits, and nomenclature. Look in detail at the methods, morphology, and terminology used to describe plants throughout the seasons, and gain an understanding of how the plant kingdom is organized and named. This course covers important “groundwork” for anyone hoping to become a better botanist. Learn the vocabulary of botany on your own schedule through videos with Longwood staff, flashcards, vocabulary games, and hundreds of beautiful images. Click here for more information.
Trees, Shrubs, and Conifers
We’ve selected 45 popular species of trees, shrubs, and conifers to help you build your ID skills and botanical vocabulary. Soon you’ll be saying “I know that one!” when you’re walking in your neighborhood or hiking in the forest. This class will also teach you about living fossils, conifers that lose their leaves in the fall, and trees with knees! Take the skills you learn through engaging online live sessions, photo stories, Longwood Gardens Plant Fact pages, discussion forums, and hundreds of beautiful images and apply them to plants you’ll encounter outside of the class. Click here for more information.
