Tips for Engagement:
- Integrate into Curriculum: Align the Census with science standards (e.g., ecosystems, biodiversity, data collection, insect life cycles). Check out all of the 4-H Pollinator Curriculum that is already aligned for you!
- Classroom Counting Project: Take your class outside to a school garden or nearby green space to conduct the count together.
- Pre- and Post-Census Activities: Prepare students with lessons on pollinator identification and the importance of pollinators, and follow up with data analysis and reflection.
- "Pollinator Story" Project: Have students create stories, presentations, or art based on their observations during the Census.
- Story Time with "The Great Pollinator Count" by Susan Edwards Richmond (Author) , Stephanie Fizer Coleman (Illustrator), the official Census story book!
- Generic Guidance for a Successful Census Program for K-12 Teachers
- Coloring Sheets and Stickers! Educational and entomologically-accurate coloring sheets and fun stickers are available!
- Print a certificate showing you participated or print a sticker to show your Census pride!
- Need some quick and easy resources for your Census event? Check out our Pollinator Outreach Kit item list.
Activities to Build Momentum:
- School Pollinator Garden: Start or enhance a school pollinator garden as a living laboratory for ongoing observation.
- "Pollinator Protectors" Club: Form an extracurricular club focused on pollinator conservation, leading up to and beyond the Census.
- Guest Speakers: Invite an Extension Agent, Master Gardener, or local entomologist to speak to your class about pollinators.
Utilizing Extension- and Research-Based Resources:
- GSePC "Resources for Educators": This section of the website offers PowerPoints, lesson plans, activity sheets (like insect observation and honey bee roles), and ideas for integrating math and language arts.
- N.C. Cooperative Extension 4-H: Check with your local 4-H program for pollinator-related curricula or projects.
- The Nature Conservancy's "Garden Lesson Plan: Habitat and Pollinators": Provides a framework for conducting a species census and understanding habitat.
- The Bee Cause Project: This organization works with specialists at Southeastern universities and has developed a robust resource library of activities, curricula, grants and certifications. This organization also offers the "Bee a Friend to Pollinators" Certification, which comes with a potential grant for building pollinator habitat.
