The Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox has always been the go-to site for photos of cultivated plants, both native and exotic. We are pleased to announce that the Plant Toolbox also hosts illustrations of native trees and shrubs of the Southeast by botanist-artist Dr. John Tobe. The Plant Toolbox currently hosts 35 of Dr. Tobe’s illustrations, but more will be added in the future.

These technical illustrations highlight the form, leaves, flowers and fruits. They include diagnostic details useful in identifying the species and distinguishing them from other similar plants. They also typically include illustrations of the seedlings, which is something most guides do not show. The illustrations are in color and were created digitally over the past few years as a form of self-study. None of the illustrations has been published previously. The Plant Toolbox is pleased to share these illustrations under Dr. Tobe’s Creative Commons license.

Dr. Tobe, who summers in western North Carolina, has spent his career in the Southeast working with native species in wetland delineation and habitat restoration. He is coauthor of Florida Wetland Plants: An Identification Manual published by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in 1998. In addition, he has built gardens in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina, and is an accomplished grower and plantsman.
