Scientific Name Verification

Plant nomenclature in the Plant Toolbox is standardized to agree with Plants of the World Online (POWO) from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. POWO and other taxonomic authorities (such as those listed below) sometimes disagree on the names of plants. When that happens, we use the POWO names and list the other names as synonyms. If you search for the plant using either name, you'll get to the right page because our search function looks at both current names and synonyms. Fungal names agree with those on Index Fungorum.Other nomenclature resources include:

Common Names

Common names are taken from multiple sources including local floras and field guides, the USDA Plants Database, Flora of the Southeastern United States, the Missouri Botanical Garden's Plant Finder, and other resources. Remember, common names vary from place to place, and the same common name may be used for different plants. Common names are not as reliable as scientific names.
